Google runs in three-man teams who have three month projects. Larger projects are sub-divided into three month chunks. Teams at liberty to use any langauge for that project, and after three months are up, they are allowed to move onto other projects. Twenty percent (i.e. 8 hours) of their time is devoted to pet projects. Strict Python programming requirements (must pass style test before allowed to commit).
This is an interesting article that helps explain the problems with English that I think make it unwieldy to learn to read. I favor the idea of improving the alphabet.
